How to Take Care of Leather Seats

Every time you get into your vehicle, they remind you of how glad you are that someone invented leather upholstery. But, no matter how much we love the natural leather interior of our vehicles, we don’t always know how to take care of leather seats.

5 STEPS TO PROPERLY CLEAN LEATHER CAR SEATS

The first thing to appreciate about leather care of any sort is that you’re dealing with a natural product. Leather surfaces are more prone to damage from wear and tear, cracking and fading than synthetic fabrics. Caring for your vehicle’s leather surfaces means regular inspection, cleaning, and conditioning, with specific leather cleaners and conditioners.

Use the following steps to keep your leather seats looking their best.

1. Vacuum Away Loose Dirt and Debris – This is something you may want to do even between cleanings. All sorts of dirt and debris can find its way onto your seats. The longer you leave it there, the more chance it has of scratching the finished surface of the leather.
2. Use Leather Cleaner – Spray your leather cleaner of choice onto one section of the seat. Use a clean cloth, and make it a microfiber towel if you something that’s better at removing dirt. You can try using a soft-bristled brush on any problem areas.
3. Dry the Seats – Use a clean microfiber cloth to wipe off excess cleaner. The leather will have absorbed some of the cleaner and they may remain damp even after you dry them. If so, leave them for at least 24 hours before moving onto the next step.
4. Condition the Leather – Apply a liberal amount of leather conditioner to the seats. Spread it around for even coverage. Leave the conditioner on for four to six hours after application.
5. Remove Remaining Conditioner – Again using a clean microfibre cloth, wipe away any remaining conditioner.
