4 Reasons Why Auto Body Repair Estimates Vary

Like just about everything else you get estimates for, like home renovations, it pays to get more than one quote for any auto body repair work you might need. But instead of finding the lowest price, getting multiple quotes for collision repair really has more to do with finding the best value for your money.

In other words, the lowest quote for repairing any damage to your car is rarely the best, or even the least costly quote. One way to look at it is, if offering the lowest price was the best way to get business, wouldn’t every collision repair shop be offering lower prices?

Here are just a few reasons why one auto body repair estimate might be higher or lower than another.

1. Quality of Materials

There varying degrees of quality in all the materials used to repair your car. From replacement engine parts and body panels to the paint that goes on the body panel, the better the quality, the longer they will last.

2. The Company is a DRP

A DRP (Direct Repair Program) is an agreement between automotive insurance companies and collision repair shops where the insurance company gets lower rates for repairs in exchange for sending insurance customers to the repair shop. You are not obligated to get your car repaired at a DRP, no mater what your insurance company tells you. And, remember, DRPS work for your insurance company, not for you.

3. You Need Specialized Repairs

If your car has an aluminum body or parts, you must use a certified aluminum body repair facility if you want your car fixed properly. Many shops will tell you they can repair aluminum body work, but they don’t have the right equipment and/or training.

It’s the same for certain brands of automobile. The revolutionary Tesla is a specialized automobile that needs specialized body repairs. Yes, any repair shop will tell you it can repair a Tesla, but Tesla itself tells you to take their vehicles to a Tesla-Approved Body Shop.

4. Experience

Simply put, a body repair shop will pay a lot less for a team of repair technicians with little or no experience than they will for a team of seasoned, qualified specialists.

It’s one of those “you can pay now, or you can pay later” things. Except, when it comes auto body repair, paying even a little less now will mean you have to pay a lot more later.
